Unity Christian High School

Description

Unity Christian High School is an independent 9-12 high school community. In 1999 the Board of Education and community voted to purchase an 80 acre parcel and began the master planning process to relocate the school. The existing structure was inadequate for the new programs and educational expectations for classroom space, technology, cafeteria and constituent community gathering spaces. The overarching basis for the design of the new structure was to continue to build upon the strong sense of community within the school. The organizational model for the floor plan was centered on the 2-story commons space which runs through the building. This brightly colored and naturally lit space functions as main entry, cafeteria and main circulation path and connection to the two academic wings and student focused gathering area. This space also parallels the multi-purpose space gymnasium and worship chapel and serves as a pre- and post-function space for competition athletics and community gatherings. The building’s exterior shell is composed of a sequence of insulated and textured precast concrete panels and glass bands. Interior surfaces are a contrast of concrete walls and burnished floors, with strong colors and bands of wood to add texture and warmth.
