Holland Public Schools Soccer and Tennis Complex

One of the first and most visible parts of a larger district wide facility improvement plan was the Holland High School Soccer and Tennis Complex. Working with the Administration, Board of Education, students, staff and community members, the overwhelming design charge was to focus on flexible, practical, functional and responsible actions. The transformation of an existing, dense urban site into an athletic complex was one step in accomplishing this charge. Replacing the existing natural turf field with a synthetic field allowed for a multi-purpose function for multiple sports teams, physical education classes, and community recreational programs. The re-use of existing bleachers, team shelters and various site amenities provided a cost savings allowing the additional purchase of a tennis shelter, bleachers and soccer scoreboard. Safety and security were improved by exchanging an existing student parking lot with 12 long life span post tensioned concrete tennis courts and creating better internal site relationships between programmatic functions. Consideration to responsible sustainable practice was of high importance by paving the new parking lot with pervious concrete to reduce storm water runoff and installing electric vehicle charging stations.
