Calvin College Bruce Dice Mineralogical Museum

The design of Dice Mineralogical Museum at Calvin College was a unique opportunity to blend together an exhibition gallery and an educational environment. The collection of mineral specimens was supplied entirely by a single donor who wished to enhance and expand the geology department. With over 300 specimens in the collection, the conscience choice was made to limit the amount of minerals on display at one time. This rotating display allows senior departmental majors the opportunity of using the museum as a hands on learning environment. The remainder of the collection resides in visible storage cabinets within the museum. The finish materials of Michigan cherry wood and copper were carefully chosen to reflect the importance of the local environment and neutral enough to provide a backdrop. Other than focused lights that highlight the collection, the other lighting is a color changing LED system located in a coffered ceiling shaped to reflect the faceted nature of minerals. This allows the mood of the atmosphere to be controlled to enhance the visitor’s experience of the current display.
